Neon Signs: A Glowing Legacy - History, Resurgence & LED Technology

Neon signs have become an iconic part of modern décor and advertising, lighting up our cities and homes with their vibrant glow. But the history of neon lighting stretches back centuries, with key milestones that led to the bright and bold neon signs we see today.

The Pioneering Moments of Neon Sign Technology

The journey towards neon signs began in 1675, when French astronomer Jean Picard first observed a faint glow from mercury in a barometer tube. While this phenomenon wasn't understood at the time, it laid the groundwork for future discoveries in the field of electric lighting.

In the mid-1800s, Heinrich Geissler and Julius Plücker advanced this concept by creating Geissler tubes. These glass tubes, filled with various gases including neon gas, played a significant role in the development of neon lighting and set the stage for the future of neon signs.

In 1910, Georges Claude, a French inventor, made the breakthrough that brought neon signs to life. By filling a glass tube with neon gas and applying an electrical charge, he created the first vibrant, colorful neon light. This discovery led to the birth of neon signage, revolutionizing the advertising industry.

From Discovery to Commercial Use

Georges Claude’s groundbreaking discovery of neon lights didn’t stay in the lab for long. By 1915, he patented his neon lighting invention, and by 1923, the first neon sign was displayed in the United States. This initial sign, placed at Packard Motors’ showroom in Los Angeles, marked the beginning of the widespread use of neon lights in advertising.

Claude’s exclusive rights to produce neon lighting meant he had a monopoly for several years, but once his patents expired, other companies were free to use his technology, and the neon sign market exploded.

The Spread of Neon Lighting Around the World

As the 20th century progressed, neon signs began appearing in cities all over the world. From the bright lights of Las Vegas to the bustling streets of New York City, neon signs became synonymous with modernity, drawing attention and illuminating storefronts, theaters, and more.

In the 1930s and 1940s, neon lights made their mark at major international events like the Chicago Century of Progress Exposition and the New York World’s Fair. They symbolized progress and the bright future of technology and design.

The Dimming of Neon Signs

However, by the 1960s, neon lighting started to lose its luster. The high maintenance costs associated with neon signs, along with the rise of cheaper alternatives, caused many businesses to move away from neon lights. As a result, neon signs were seen as outdated and less appealing in a rapidly changing world.

The economic downturn of the 1970s only added to this decline, and for a time, neon signs were largely forgotten, relegated to museums and historical displays.

A New Era for Neon: The Rise of LED Neon Technology

Despite the decline of traditional neon signs, a new chapter began in the 21st century with the advent of LED neon technology. LED neon lights are now widely used in both home décor and commercial establishments like bars, restaurants, and coffee shops.

The new popularity of LED neon signs can be attributed to social media, where people love sharing their experiences with the glowing signs. This trend has sparked a resurgence in the demand for neon lights, with many businesses and individuals seeking customized designs to add a modern touch to their spaces.

At Yellowpop, we create unique LED neon signs by hand, ensuring that each one is as individual as the customer who orders it. This customization process makes LED neon lights a modern, artisanal alternative to the traditional neon sign.

The Timeless Appeal of Neon Lighting

The history of neon signs has been marked by innovation, decline, and revival. Today, thanks to LED technology, neon lighting is once again a popular and vibrant choice for those seeking to add color and personality to their environments. Whether it’s for a personal space or a business, neon lights continue to shine brightly as a symbol of creativity and modern design.
